THE HEART OF RUBLOU: “A Mother’s Love”

A mother’s love is the strongest of bonds.

For Miss Ruby Ticman, this motherly love went beyond the natural affection she has for her family. Her love was a significant force that led to the success of their business – Rublou Inc.

Rublou, an eponym of Ruby and her husband Louie, was a labor of love. Miss Ruby recalls the sacrifices she had to make to help establish the business and lay the groundwork for its growth. “Louie’s salary as a police officer was not enough. He knew that we cannot rely on his income alone if we will build a family. So, I had to sacrifice giving up my career as a nurse to help and support my husband in running the small business for our family,” related Miss Ruby. “My husband and my children and the business needed me, and as a wife and a mother, my family always comes first.”

With Miss Ruby onboard, Rublou has an unbeatable tandem that would move the business forward for the next three decades, making it the success that it is now.

Celebrating Rublou’s 37th anniversary this year, Miss Ruby shares the recipes of their success– honesty, hard work, and a strong faith in God.

And her greatest achievement? For Miss Ruby, it’s her family, especially her kids.

“Whatever business you’ll be in, successful or not, don’t give up! We do not know what God’s plans are for us, so always pray and call on Him”, she shares some words of wisdom. “Never forget to have a grateful heart for the blessings–a loving family, honest people, friends, employees, spiritual and material things, even small and big problems. Always help the poor and the needy, in whatever way you can.”

About the founders by people who know them personally, and by heart.

Marivic Alfanta (Mall Manager; Louie’s Assistant in Banana-Q Business): At a young age, Louie would wake up at about 1:00am daily to go to either Divisoria or Biñan market to buy raw materials for his banana cue and fruit stand. His banana cue was special, his “work of love” which fetches long queue of customers daily. His business discernment was evident such that after about a year of successful sustained operations, informal financial institutions (commonly known as “five-six”) extended to him additional capital for expansion of his business. Having acquired cooking skills from his mother, he realized that food business can be profitable thus he diversified adding more cooked food items: bulalo, mechado, menudo, asado, bopis, and more. Each one was a specialty item which also drew customers queuing to be served.

While doing business on the side, he was studying in Muntinlupa High School. Prior to graduation, he was persuaded by his father to go to PMA, purposely to wean him away from student radicalism at that time. He reluctantly obliged, passed all the requirements and reported to the academy putting an end to his first business venture. Sayang naman, yet education is paramount!

Carmelita Santos (Elementary School Teacher of Bayanan Elementary School): I remember Gen. Louie as a very bright and obedient pupil of Bayanan Elementary School. He was the Valedictorian, Class Mathematician, Class Grammarian, and Class Historian of his class. He was likewise conferred the “Outstanding Pupil Award” of our school while he was still in Fourth Grade.

I was always amazed of his ability to juggle his food business and his studies during his student days. He was already a budding businessman at a young age. I’m really happy to see him now as the same Louie that I knew then, despite his successes in practically all his endeavors… A God-fearing, generous and down-to-earth person.  Above all, I really admire his humility.

Col. Biene Jose (Captain Louie Ticman’s Junior Officer in the ‘80s): Napakasipag at napakagaling ni Sir Louie. When he was my Commanding Officer in the 221st PC Company, we always excelled as a Unit. Perennial awardee kami, either Best PC Company of the Year (Regional or National level), or Best PC Officer of the Year si Sir.

We were perennial awardees as we always excelled despite Sir Louie helping in their family business. Ang advise pa nga niya sa amin, huwag umasa sa sweldo, maghanapbuhay ng marangal at pinagpawisan, for the future of our children.

Police Superintendent LUIZO C TICMAN (DSC), Rizal Provincial Director receiving the “Best Senior Police Commissioned Officer of the Year 1999 Award” from Chief, PNP PANFILO MORENA LACSON assisted by Police Chief Superintendent LUCAS MALLILIN MANAGUELOD in Camp Vicente Lim, Canlubang, Laguna on January 25, 2000.

I also recall that Sir Louie always stood up for what is right. One time, there was a very influential person who wanted us to clear the picket line of laborers on strike… at all cost, and if we would not, said officer “threatened” that he would get soldiers from other PC/INP units to do the task. Sir Louie stood his ground insisting that the influential person provide the requisites to legally and morally do the task… but if he (influential person) insists, he could do what pleases himself. However, if violence erupts and somebody gets injured or dies, Sir Louie assured that he will charge him and put him behind bars. Dahil dyan, Sir Louie was later summoned by our Provincial Commander to shed light on the ‘complaint’ of the person. After hearing Sir Louie’s side, the Provincial Commander commented: “Ang tapang mo Louie! But you are right. You have my support!” Sir Louie is well known for standing up against bullies of lowly citizens. Marami pang kwento tungkol sa kanyang pagtatanggol sa maliliit na mamamayan. He would always say, “you can relieve me, or send me back to Mindanao (war-torn at that time) for combat duty”, kapag makakasagasa ng mga ordinaryong mamayan na salat na sa buhay ay madedehado pa sa batas! He would always insist that things should be done the legal and moral way.

I actually owe my career to Lt. Gen Ticman, madami ako natutunan sa kanya being a very bright and intelligent superior. He possesses the character of a good leader kaya napamahal siya sa mga tauhan at kahit mga superiors namin dahil sa katangi-tanging husay at galing nya sa serbisyo. Sir Louie is indeed legendary!

Mr. Gene Uylangco (Premiere Development Bank, Cainta Branch Manager
in the ‘80s): I have seen how Rublou founder Louie Ticman expanded and diversified his small meat business thru loans from our bank which I was
managing at that time. He started with a loan of about Php 300,000 which he and wife Ruby used as capital for their start-up meat business. Ms. Ruby
on the other hand transacts with our branch daily coming from her rounds with customers in different wet markets in Muntinlupa, Marikina, Cainta and other parts of Rizal Province. Her toddler children were usually in tow…with second child Loise still on milk-feeding.

Louie wanted to assure the consumers of the quality of their meat so he ventured in slaughterhouse operations. Several years thereafter, the big banks took notice of Rublou’s steady growth and progress and offered loans for their ventures and bigger projects. Nonetheless, out of gratitude, the founders would continue doing business with us, along with the big banks. Louie has a good heart, as he would later vouch for small businessmen to help them grow their businesses, too through borrowed capital from us.

I am so proud and honored to have been part of Rublou’s history, particularly in its early formative years, as well as initial growth and diversification. The company has grown much much bigger as of today… that’s because of hard-work, solid management, and certainly due to the core values of the founders. They are known as God-fearing and persons of deep humility and well-founded business ethics!

Ed Ayaquil (Past President, Rotary Club of Suburban East Rizal; and Past President,Cainta Jaycees): I can still remember, one time when we were having a big Rotary gathering in Cainta Rizal, I heard Rotary Club of CaintaPast President Boyet Fernandez asked: “O bakit nandito si Charter President Louie, di ba may parating na super typhoon… Isn’t he supposed to be looking after his fishpen?”.

To think that this time, his fishpen was re-located in a different place, but the same thing happened again, also after a big storm… And to happen twice I think is no longer a fluke, moreso that there were many other fishpens in the area, these phenomenal incidents happen only to his fishpens.

Well, I guess I can only attribute this to his honesty in his business dealings. All these must have come from above.

Abet Dedeles (Past National Vice President, Philippine Jaycees; and Past President, Rotary Club of Suburban East Rizal):Ireally admire the way Gen. Louie does his business, he’s never been abusive despite his being already powerful because of his rank and position in the Philippine Constabulary (PC) from the time that he and Ruby founded and nurtured RubLou into what it is today. I would want to believe that this is the reason why they are so blessed and successful in just about any business they undertake.
